Nickeldime

Nickeldime

March 20th, 2009

The buzz: A group of friends with a passion for quality libations brings us a brand new den of iniquity which is just simply too chic for words and a modern day speakeasy for imbibers in the know.

The décor: Amid the neighborhood’s bistros and cafes, Nickeldime is a quiet breath of fresh air. Totally nondescript from the outside, a small sign leads through the entrance to a treasure trove of sake, shochu, wines and whiskies. The décor is a distinct contrast of Eastern and Western cultures, from the drinks to the interior design. Comfortable seating makes this intimate venue ideal for cozy private gatherings.

The drinks: Nickeldime offers up a great selection of carefully curated Old World, New World wines and select vintages from California, whiskies from all over, and the all important Japanese sake. By day, the bar is a tasting room and bottle shop where you have the chance to taste the rotating list of wine or whiskey. By night, the place turns into a craft bar with a focus on artisan infusions and cocktails. Savor the Earl Grey-infused Afternoon Delight ($20)—Earl Grey tea and Japanese shochu with a dash of yuzu. Another drink, The Milhouse ($13), takes its cue from the convenient store slushee albeit with an alcoholic twist of lychee-infused sake.

The music: Although the bar reeks of snootiness (it’s actually a friendly joint), don’t expect stuffy jazz and bossa nova to swirl your glass of Woodford Reserve bourbon to. The music is rather young and upbeat, thanks to the bar’s young owners who maintained that its music policy will be a mix urban beats, house, R&B and hip hop. The owners also have plans to introduce a live music element on weeknights.

The crowd: Serious liquor aficionados. Expect the occasional curious Bukit Timah resident.
