Spill some rhymes with Singapore-born rap artist Masia One.

Whoever thought that a Public Enemy tape from Bedok Market would take a Singapore girl so far in the hip hop scene in the US, becoming the scene’s latest darling and a recent talent to be signed on by the legendary Dr. Dre. Hip hop super artist Masia One is back for a one-night only gig for “Hennessy Artistry” alongside DJ Paul T and MC Celsius 7. I-S caught up with her to find out more about her upcoming show and learns other Masia One details—like her enduring love of chicken rice.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do here once you have the chance to get away from your work?

Go get some chicken rice. It has to come with soup and good chili.

Come Jun 26, you will be performing for your homeland. How are you feeling about that?

I am always thrilled to perform in Singapore, yet I sometimes feel unsure because I see that hip hop here is often misunderstood as just something fashionable rather than a whole culture with elements including music, visual art (grafitti), DJing and break-dancing.

Tell us more about your upcoming collaboration with deck veterans Paul T and Celsius 7.

I’m especially excited to be performing with Paul T. When I started out pursuing a path in the music industry, I felt very alone, especially as a Singaporean-born artist in a very competitive, foreign music industry. Meeting Paul T made me realize that those that came before me have found great success in maintaining their unique perspectives on how they express their music. At the same time, I love how concise Celsius 7 is on his rhymes, clear butter-smooth goodness on tracks like “Wanderlust” and of course, “My Adidas n Me.”

Would you consider shooting a music video here soon?

I would definitely love that! A shout-out to all Singaporean directors: chicken rice and ice kachang on me after the shoot!

Closer on the calendar, what can we expect from you on the “Hennessy Artistry” show?

“Hennessy Artistry” is going to rock! With Paul T on the decks with Celsius 7 and me on the mike, we’ll be throwing down a show that is rarely witnessed in Singapore. For my set, I want to keep everyone’s bodies dancing and their minds racing. In Jamaica, they call that the “Jam Down”!—Andrea Lin
