Michi Fujii will sweep you off your feet with her brand of jazz razzmatazz for the latest instalment of Jazz@Southbridge.

Michi Fujii boasts a phenomenal CV: Having graduated from the acclaimed Jazz Institution of Boston and Massachusetts Berklee College of Music, won accolades at international festivals, and performed the world over. I-S chats up the trumpet maestro.

Let’s get down to basics. Why the trumpet, and how did you get into jazz?

There was a trumpet at home, and I was so curious about it and its melody that I began playing it and I have not put it down since. Since then, I played the trumpet in a brass band in school, and today,
I am still so hooked to my trumpet. I got into jazz as I am inspired by my father, who is a jazz pianist.

Who would you like to collaborate with in your music, and why?

I actually have many ideas. But more realistically, I have been invited to be part of a project by Kensaku Tanikawa with strings. Tanikawa is a well-known composer, arranger and pianist. Such collaborations are uncommon these days, so I am really excited.

How do you think jazz is facing up against competition from other increasingly popular genres such as pop and R&B?

Everyone has a different take on jazz, so it’s hard to say. But I know what you mean. What sets jazz apart is its strong element of Interplay (that is, improvisation by reacting to each other when playing with others). The flexibility to mixing and mingling with other genres, the spontaneity you get when performing with people you meet for the first time … all the endless possibilities. To keep the scene alive, however, we really need more places for more people to touch jazz and its spirit.

There is a Japanese jazz vocalist who shares a similar name as you. Do the two of you happen to be related, and what do you think of her music?

I’m part of a concert tour consisting of musicians from Tokyo, Kyoto, and the US. We’ve been on tour for 15 years now and this coming fall, we are releasing a memorial album.—Walter Sim
