Scene Stealer -- Master Melodies

Be mesmerized by “Familiar Ground” this Singapore International Piano Festival.

Four enthralling evenings beckon as great piano virtuosos take Victoria Concert Hall by storm at the upcoming 16th Singapore International Piano Festival.

Over the years, this piano festival has captured audience’s heart and critics’ approval with its themed approach and engaging program lineup. This year’s festival, themed “Familiar Ground,” will see each pianist present recitals of works by classical world’s unparalleled maestros, like Chopin, Bach and Prokofiev.

Festival Director Goh Yew Lin, in explaining the festival theme, says, “For those who look for cutting edge in festivals, the program may seem slightly conservative. In my opinion, great music demands repetition and re-interpretation: we should never tire of encountering masterpieces refracted through the minds and hands of true artists.”

Looks like an opportune time for piano newbies to get in touch with the magic of classical music, while aficionado classical music lovers will definitely appreciate a reconnection with the melodies of the masters. I-S gladly tunes in to the rest of the festival:

Nikolai Demidenko

The esteemed Russian-trained pianist has a special affinity with the works of Chopin and recently took part in the Chopin & His Europe Festival in Warsaw, Poland. A career highlight is winning the Gramophone Award—one of the most prestigious honors in the classical music industry—in 1992. With his vast experience spanning three decades, this is an evening not to be missed. Jun 26, 8pm. Victoria Concert Hall, 11 Empress Place, 6338-4401. $20-$45 from Sistic.

Pascal Rogé & Ami Rogé

The husband-wife pair has performed at prestigious festivals and concert venues around the world. Exemplifying the finest in French pianism that is characterized by elegance, beauty and delicacy, Pascal Rogé has been revered as the best French repertory performer in the world. Jun 27, 8pm. Victoria Concert Hall, 11 Empress Place, 6338-4401. $20-45 from Sistic.

Yevgeny Sudbin

Rounding off the four-day program, the suave 29 year-old Russian pianist looks set to be the next big thing in the classical music genre, gaining popularity for his critically acclaimed and award-winning recordings. His Scriabin recording also charted in The Daily Telegraph’s album of the year, and won the Midem award at Cannes for Best Instrumental CD of the Year. Jun 28, 8pm.
