Although the Korean wave is still at fever-pitch in Singapore, there are still far less Korean restaurants here as compared to Japanese restaurants. Which was why we were intrigued when we heard that Sarang (it means “love” in Korean) had sprung up in such a far-out location. We dropped by on a weekend for lunch, and were greeted with the building’s hospital-like lobby. Thankfully, a smiley member of the wait staff greeted us when we arrived upstairs and made us feel very welcome in the cleanly furnished restaurant. This sincere, enthusiastic service continued throughout our meal. Point to note: if you want to order a set for lunch (which is better value), you can choose from the set dinner menu too, strangely. You can also choose your appetizers and mains. We made our choice: our dinner set ($38) came with a wonderfully smooth porridge amuse bouche, three types of pan-fried Korean pancakes made of kimchi, pumpkin and vegetables; braised pork with aged kimchi and tofu; angel hair noodles with spicy Korean paste sauce; and dessert. We also ordered a bulgogi bibimbap (Korean stone pot rice with beef, $15). The pancakes were yummy (our fave was the pumpkin), while the pork, which arrived in a simmering pot put on a warmer, was rather firm, with some bits of fat. We liked the gravy, but weren’t so keen on the too-hard tofu. The noodles were not bad too—smooth and generously portioned, served with a more-sweet-than-spicy sauce. The bulgogi bibimbap was OK, but the sauce that it came with proved a tad too spicy, so we didn’t mix it all in—which resulted in a rather dry-tasting dish. In between, we enjoyed some strange, but sometimes tasty side dishes (these are free-flowing compliments of the house). Dessert was two red bean sesame balls which were very sweet but still good. The yuja cha (citron honey tea, $4) is a lovely warm drink that is a must-try. Overall, we didn’t have too bad a time here—although Sarang’s food isn’t exactly cheap. However, its food (like all Korean chow) is best appreciated by those who can take spicier food. Takeaway . Parking at Science Park Dr. MC,V.
